Bonni so graciously allowed me to write a review of a book I just finished reading so, I wrote up a review for her blog. I hope you all enjoy it.
Paprika is a science fiction book that was written in 1993 by Yasutaka Tsutsui. It first came to my attention when I watched the film adaptation Paprika last year. I'm someone who always loves to read books then watch the adaptations and see the differences, etc. And this instance was no different. I went and saw the movie, then immediately bought the book (mainly because I enjoyed the movie so much.)
Paprika has a large cast of characters, but the main character is Atsuko Chiba, a psychotherapist at the Insitute for Psychiatric Research. In this story, some prototype models of dream-invading devices go missing, and Atsuko and her partner Tokita have to find out who took them and how to get them back.
This book was a lot like the movie, but delved a lot deeper into the world of dreams and how to analyze them. I really enjoyed the first section of the book that showed Atsuko (as Paprika) analyzing the dreams of patients and helping them through their issues. And that part of the book is crucial to the absolutely insane finale to the book.
I must admit, I think on the whole I liked the movie more, but there were some parts of the book that gave better insight into parts of the movie that weren't perfectly clear. But the movie was a lot more succinct in it's plotline and just told the story a little more efficiently.
The biggest difference to me was the ending. Both the book and the film had completely ridiculous endings, but the film's ending seemed a lot more coherent. The book made some crazy leaps at the end that I didn't quite understand, but it didn't seem to hurt the story. It just felt...odd at times.
Overall, I would highly suggest this book to anyone who enjoys sci-fi. There were a lot of times when the book reminded me of Inception, so if you enjoy that type of story, you should give this a shot. It is translated from Japanese, so a times the translation is spotty, but it isn't bad at all.
